Thank You to Countryside Properties

As a school community we would all like to express our thanks and gratitude to the team at countryside properties who have kindly made and donated this beautiful story telling chair for our young children. As you can imagine the staff and children are delighted. They have also made a superb potting table for the eco club and mud kitchen for our year 1 children. Countryside properties have been working adjacent to our school on the new housing project.

Year 5 & 6 Commemorative Piece - June 2021

The children in year 5 and 6 created this stunning Artwork as a commemorative piece, in which they have reflected on the past 15 months and what it means to them. They have depicted this through images and words. We were fortunate enough to welcome back Victoria Hough who worked with the children and put together their ideas and images.

Andy Grant, Motivational Speaker - June 2021

We were delighted to welcome Andy Grant to school this week to talk to our year 5 and 6 children. Andy has faced real adversity in his life – losing his Mum to Leukemia at a young age, then, having suffered life changing injuries in an IED explosion while serving in the Royal Marines in Afghanistan, Andy decided to have his leg amputated to give him a better quality of life. Andy is now an Honorary Colonel in the Royal Marines and over the past 10 years has climbed some of the world’s highest mountains, learnt to surf in California, bungee jumped in New Zealand and is the fastest single leg amputee in the world over 10k. Andy now uses his experiences to motivate and inspire others and has travelled all over the world sharing his story. Andy’s story inspires a belief that any challenges and difficulties can not only be overcome, but surpassed, with the right mindset.

This was a wonderful opportunity for our year 5 and 6 children who were so responsive and engaged throughout the visit.

World Book Week - March 2021

To celebrate World Book Week this year, we spent a week exploring the theme of 'Books Can Take You Anywhere'. Each class explored the benefits and enjoyment of reading and learned about a certain country or special place through looking at books and stories from there. The children had different challenges to complete each day to celebrate reading in our 'Reading Rocket Challenge' and everyone could have a go at our fabulous 'Masked Reader' challenge. Did you guess the teacher behind the mask and what book they were reading?

The week was a huge success with children, at home and in school, celebrating the actual day by dressing up as a favourite book character and celebrating our love of reading altogether through Zooms. Well done XII Apostles' super readers!

Mental Health Week - February 2021

Safer Internet Day 2021 - February 2021

The week before half term, we celebrated Safer Internet Day in school. The theme for the week was 'reliability in the online world.' The children explored this theme through assemblies, stories, live class sessions and independent activities.

We also thought that Safer Internet Day was a good opportunity to look at ways to keep ourselves safe when using the internet, a reminder of the SMART rules and it was a good time to discuss with the children of the importance of online behaviour. The children are using the internet more regularly than ever at the moment so we like to take the chance to work with the children around these important topics and discuss issues that arise for using the internet as much as possible. We really encourage children and parents to continue these discussions at home.

In Key Stage 1, the children thought carefully about their online behaviour and how important it is to tell a trusted adult if they are worried or upset by anything they have seen online. Here are some examples of the great work the children completed at home and in school. In Key Stage 2, the children thought about the advantages of the internet and the potential dangers of being online. Some classes learned more about what can and can’t be shared on the internet and others used what they have learned to create their own rules to keep safe. It was very impressive to see some children using their own computer coding to make these wonderful posters! Here are some example of the work created by the juniors. Well done to all of the children who took part in the day and I hope they are able to apply what they learned when online.

The City of Trees Project. Naturalising the Borough - December 2020

We have been fortunate enough to be invited to be involved in this project and Year 5 and 6 thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to dig and plant saplings on Friday. The idea is to create a wild life garden and woodland area in the school grounds. This is a long-term vision set out by the council that aims to attract wildlife and species of wildflowers never usually seen in the borough.
