Lunch Time and School Dinners
Lunch time is 12.00 noon until 1.00pm.
As from September 2014 all infant children are entitled to a free school meal. The Government are funding this initiative in order to provide a healthy, nutritious meal for all children at lunchtime with the aim of improving academic attainment and saving families money following the Department of education’s recent review of school food.
Free school Meals 2026
However if your child is in KS 1 or KS 2 and they are entitled to a free school meal it is important that you still register your entitlement in order for schools to receive the pupil premium funding. This money is used to provide support and resources for children in school.
There is launch of a new website for completing free school meal checks which we would like to share with our parents/guardians. Any parents already claiming a free school meal do not need to reapply, this is the process for new applications.
Click here to complete the form online.
First step is to select the school your child attends.
Please note: Parents can include multiple children on the same application, provided all listed children have the same parental responsibility arrangements. This is explained at the start of the application.
We ask for a few details about your child (year group, date of birth, and home postcode).
At the end of the application, parents are informed of the expected timescales. Checks are completed weekly on Tuesdays, except during census weeks when checks are carried out daily.
If a parent requires a quicker decision, the checking service can carry out one-off checks. School staff can contact us directly with the parent’s details (NI or NASS number, surname, and date of birth).
Once the check is complete, school will be notified in the normal way of the outcome. Schools will continue to inform parents of the result, as per the current process.
The checking service will continue to do monthly rechecks of everyone not currently eligible to a free school meal.
If parents do an internet search for Wigan FSM / Free School Meals – they will be directed to the benefits webpage. This is not a check that is completed by EBIU.
School Dinners for Junior Children
If your child is in the juniors and you may choose for them to have a school dinner. This costs £2.61 per day if you are not entitled to a free school meals and you are asked to pay for the full week every Monday (£13.05). Please pay on Parent Pay or send money into school with your child in an envelope with their name and amount clearly marked. Unfortunately in line with the school meals policy, school is not able to provide a school dinner where payment is not forthcoming or authorisation for free school meals has not been received.
The meals are cooked on the premises and are excellent well balanced value for the price. A sample menu is attached. Our cook Keziah is very accommodating and if your child prefers a sandwich Keziah our cook, is happy to provide this as an alternative to a cooked meal. Last year we refurbished our Kitchen and serving area to make it easier for the children to select their preferences from the choices available and this year we have included a separate bar for cold food selection.
If your child is in the juniors they may choose to have a packed lunch brought from home. Please ensure that this is kept is a sealed lunch box container with a small ice –pack and that this is a balanced and nutritious meal. Cans and bottles are not allowed.
